They Don't Make 'em Like That Anymore

 


Quite the expedition to attempt discover the fabled Northwest Passage to the Orient.

The almost three year journey - beginning in 1803 and ending in 1806 - had Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.... 


....brave two severe winters in bitterly cold conditions.



They never did find the Northwest Passage, but did find a route to the Pacific Ocean.


Few people realize that they had attempted to find the Northwest Passage the previous year.....

Maybe they discovered their way as firsts for white men. I'm sure the Indigenous folks discovered that route and all the other "white Man" discovered routes thousands of years before.

Yes, after the last ice age melted and a land bridge between Asia and Alaska formed, that is the route by which the Indigenous people first came to North America some 12,000 years ago. So I guess Lewis and Clark were looking for the reverse route.
