I Did Not Know That

Continuing with the colourization theme, this is Col T.E. Lawrence.

Lawrence of Arabia.

The real guy.

He died in 1935.  Looks like this could have been taken yesterday.

But they did a pretty good job of casting Peter O'Toole to play him in the movie.

Along with Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn.

But I always thought the movie Lawrence of Arabia was about some swashbuckling Englishman dressed up as a Arab guy and all his antics in the middle east. Sort of an early day James Bond.

I didn't know he was a real guy.

But maybe he was an early James Bond. He was a colonel and a demolition expert in alliance with Arab rebels in WWI. Responsible for the destruction of bridges and fuel depots of the Ottoman Empire.

He is credited with blowing up 79 bridges.

Who knew....

The way he was usually seen.....

Two Of The Greatest

A continuation of looking at old pictures recently colourized.

You may not be a fan of colourization, but seems to bring them to life.  They could be at a party today.

Colour or black & white, these two likely are easily recognizable.

And these two were good friends, with mutual admiration for each other.

The oft-quoted one liners between Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin goes like this;

Einstein claimed that Chaplin has enviable fame being understood widely without a word spoken.

Chaplin on the other hand envied Einstein as he was admired by everyone although nobody understood a word he spoke.

True Grit - Part Two

In follow up the posting of the D-Day invasion photo, here is a picture of a German soldier overcome with emotion as he was captured by the US army.

The true grit part is this kid was only 16.

His parents died the year before and he joined the army to support his siblings.

True Grit

A colourized photo of the D-Day landing 80 years ago.  June 7th, 1944.

The original black and white photo certainly seemed more bleak.

But this seems much more realistic, as to what these men were facing that fateful day.

And what were they facing?  Few of them knew.

They interviewed one 100 year old vet attending the ceremonies in France and asked him what he was trying to do.

"Get the Hell off that beach!"

You have to wonder how many of today's 18 or 19 years olds would risk their lives for their country.

Florida Man - Part Two

We told you about the Michigan man calling to his suspended license hearing....while driving.  And the judge reacting in utter disbelief.

Well, there's more to the story.

Turns out his licence was not suspended, just his driving privileges.

That's because he does have a driver's licence.

Never did.

When he made his court appearance and the details came out, turns out he'd been driving with no licence.

For ever.

This time the judge was not in utter disbelief but outraged.

"He has never had a Michigan license, ever!' said Judge Cedric Simpson, looking to set the record straight in Harris' case.

So looks like a few more days in jail coming up for this Michigan Man....

Are You Sure He's Not A Florida Man?

A Michigan man was put in jail for two days for.....

Yup. Calling in to his suspended license hearing....while driving.

The judge reacts in utter disbelief!

"Are you driving"?

Then went on, "What were you thinking?"

"What was I thinking? I was thinking about getting my wife medical help. That's what I was thinking. I wasn't thinking about the fact that I got a suspended license. I don't care about all that."

Turns out his suspended license had been reinstated, but that info never got to the Dept of Motor vehicles to officially reinstate his license. So no harm, no foul.

Except for the two days in jail....

Smart Marketers

So the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament was held over the weekend.

And I thought I noticed a small change to their logo this year.

For the I in CANADIAN they had a golfer swinging a club.

This year it looks like a golfer throwing a club.

Why would that be?

Well, last year a Canadian, Nick Taylor, was the first Canadian to actually win the Canadian national championship in 69 years.

And when the final putt dropped last year, years of pent up frustration were released.

As was Taylor's club.

Very cool how they worked the equivalent of baseball's "bat flip" into the logo this year.

As a reminder, here is a closer look at what the logo looked like at the time - just behind Taylor.

Well done. RBC......
