Digging For Sunshine

Yesterday I said that Florida had the highest 10 day rate of COVID cases in the world.

Now, I didn't check, say Burkina Faso or the Canary Islands, so if their noses are out of joint because they have higher rates, then my apologies.

But if not.....I took a closer look at Florida.  Because what the hey is going on down in the Sunshine State.  I thought Trump said sunshine killed that thing!

So here is a chart of the COVID cases per million population by county.  Sweet mama, those top two are higher than New York.  And Brazil.  [As always, click on any graph to zoom in.]

I'm pretty sure it's a result of all those 20-something idiots shotgunning beer and guzzling Jagermeister on the beach.  So lets look at in on a map.

Huh?  The top six COVID counties are all...inland?

Nary a drop of water to be found.

You have to go down to #8 to get to Miami.  And #9 is...Palm Beach Gardens.  (Must have a big retirement home.)

All other major cites (Tampa, Daytona, Orlando, Jacksonville, Pensacola) are all in the low, yellow category.

One other tidbit, is that the highest county, Liberty, in the north, butts up against Hamilton county - the lowest.  Maybe they have a travel ban between the two.

Now I'm no infectious disease expert (although I've had my share of infectious diseases, but that's another story), but I think this is the same feature that is driving up parts of Ontario - farm workers.

Backbreaking work picking fruit and vegetables, all cheek to jowl, often housed in to over-crowed bunkhouses.  Fearful of reporting feeling sick, or missing work. And the cycle continues.

That's not to say there aren't the covidiots shotgunning that beer.  Man that looks good.

I mean, how irresponsible!

But what is driving the total number of COVID cases is due to the beer loving bros, above.

Because those four south east counties (out of Florida's 67) represent 30% of the population. So when Miami sneezes, the whole state gets it.

The solution?  Dunno.  Enforced social distancing?

Or maybe just be like these guys.....

good ending comic hahahaha
Maybe all those 20 somethings beach partying were folks who lived inland away from the beaches

Love Mr. Boffo.

And I think most of the people who live inland speak a different language. Although a lot of them are also 20-somethings. But not like the beer bong bros.

Interesting - can't say much more anymore. Had no idea it's the places no one would think of inland in FL! And also yes people of Spain seem to think the same, the virus dies in sun and heat... guess should let them know about FL now!

Mike Pence advised "The first principle is that people ought to listen to their state and local authorities" on how to 'flatten the curve' etc.

And when pressed by a reporter "On the campaign, it really does sound though like you’re saying do as we say not as we do. You’re telling people to listen to local officials but in Tulsa you defied local health officials to have an event that even though you say it didn’t result in a spike, dozens of Secret Service agents, dozens of campaign staffers are now quarantined after positive tests and then in Arizona, one of the hardest hit states, you packed a church with young people who weren’t wearing masks. So how can you say that the campaign is not part of the problem that Dr. Fauci laid out?"

Pence "Well I want to remind you again that the freedom of speech and the right to peacefully assemble is enshrined in the Constitution of the United States, and even in a health crisis, the American people don’t forfeit our constitutional rights. In working with state officials as we did in Oklahoma and as we did in Arizona, we’re creating settings where people can choose to participate in the political process and we’ll continue to do that. I think it’s really important that we recognize how important freedom and personal responsibility are to this entire equation but allowing younger Americans to understand, particularly in the counties that are most impacted, the unique challenges that we’re facing in their age group, we think it is important."

And Dr. Fauci "...you have an individual responsibility to yourself. But you have a societal responsibility."

And we wonder? what's wrong?? November can't get here fast enough.

I agree with Rob... Beach people live at the beach they can go anytime it’s mostly people that make excursions to the beach that feel they need to party it up!

Maybe so. Apparently some kid just returned to New York from Florida and has already infected a bunch of people.
