End Of May COVID Stats

As we flip the calendar to a new month, new COVID cases in Canada continue their downward trend.

[As always, click on any graph to zoom in.]

That is a pretty good trend for almost the entire month of May.  If we drill down to the provinces.....

Looks like everyone is finally rowing in the same direction.  BC (or even Alberta) can't get much lower, so it's up to the Deux Amigos.

But the contrast between the two groups couldn't be clearer and really drives home the importance of contact tracing.  BC & Alberta has been stellar, and the results show it.  Ontario, not so much.

But it's tough to turn a big ship around quickly.  As The Toronto Star's Rosie MiManno points out....

...Toronto's contact tracing system is stuck in first gear.  She indicates there just doesn't seem to be any urgency.

She reports that Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical officer of Toronto public health, sent an email explaining that the contact management team works 12-hour shifts, seven days a week starting at 8 am. "These calls can only occur during the day starting at 8 a.m. and an early in the evening at 8 p.m., to respect people's privacy".

Rosie goes on, really? You'd think it wasn't, you know, a pandemic.  As if the virus knocks on the front door and says permisso? As if the virus puts its feet up overnight. Urgent after hour calls are directed to 311! Where you report potholes.

Holy $%@#%!  Even Timmy's is open 24 hours.

This is enough to give me the heebie jeebies.

Which reminds me, what sits at the bottom of the ocean and twitches?

A nervous wreck.

Gov Cuomo just used the boat (freighter) analogy in his press conference today. He addressed both COVID19 and the current protests for George Floyd. We're a mess down here in so many ways, but I'm hoping for the best.

Our numbers are way down -- although we will see after the protests if C-19 rears its ugly head again. NJ Gov. said we're ready to open Phase 2 June 15. This means outside dining, hair salons (6/22), and fitness centers (no date announced yet). Also most likely DMV will open again - my inspection was due in Feb! Also limited in person retail, and surprisingly youth summer camps. People who can work from home are expected to stay there during this stage.

A little bit of hope in a time when we really need a LOT of hope.

Well, hope that works for you. With our numbers, Toronto probably won't see much for a while.
